An international panel of experts developed unique tool to support treatment decisions in prostate cancer
More than 60,000 men in Germany are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year and face the difficult task of choosing the "right" treatment. If the tumor is confined to the prostate gland (localized prostate carcinoma), the affected person has a variety of different treatment methods at his or her disposal, including brachytherapy (internal radiation), external radiation, surgery or active surveillance, proton therapy, HIFU and cryotherapy: But which procedure is best suited for the individual?
An international committee of prostate experts, the Prostate Cancer Results Study Group (PCRSG), led by the American scientist Peter Grimm, has now developed a patient tool that makes it possible to compare the cure rates of all modern forms of therapy, depending on the risk profile of the tumor. This interactive decision support tool is based on a scientific analysis of all relevant studies on the therapy of localized prostate carcinoma from the period 2000-2013. 848 studies with more than 52,000 patients were evaluated in total.
Easy to use
The expert panel's tool is freely accessible to patients, relatives and interested parties on the Prostate Cancer Results Study Group website at . An understandable and clear presentation of the individual steps also makes it easy to use. First, each patient can determine exactly to which risk group (low, intermediate and high risk of progression) he or she belongs on the basis of his or her PSA value, Gleason score and tumor stage. In a second step, the various treatment options for the respective risk group are then listed and their effectiveness (percentage of PSA progression-free survival) is graphically displayed by clicking on them. The patient thus has the opportunity to determine the best treatment option for him or her in just a few minutes.
Dr. Grimm: "Only providing information about the effectiveness of different prostate cancer treatments allows patients to make an informed decision!"
