Prostate cancer: radiotherapy or surgery? How can my tumor be correctly assessed? What treatment options are there for benign prostate enlargement? You will receive answers to these and many other questions from the specialists of the West German Prostate Center (WPZ) at the KLINIK am RING at the 14th Prostate Patient Day. The free event will take place on November 22, 2024 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Dreikönigssaal of the Maternushaus in Cologne. We cordially invite those affected, relatives and interested parties to find out about the latest developments in early cancer detection, prevention and modern diagnostics and treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostate enlargement.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, with around 70,000 new diagnoses in Germany every year. Targeted screening can detect around 80 percent of cases at an early stage and treat them successfully. Nevertheless, many patients are often only recommended radical surgery without being sufficiently informed about gentle treatment options. Today, there are numerous proven and effective treatment methods available for organ-confined prostate cancer.
The prostate specialists at the WPZ will present modern diagnostic procedures and current treatment options. A particular focus is on brachytherapy, a high-precision radiation method in which the tumor is treated from the inside without affecting surrounding organs such as the bladder, bowel or sphincter. The interdisciplinary team at the WPZ is one of the pioneers of this technique in Germany and has already successfully carried out over 9,500 treatments, based on more than 20 years of follow-up data.
Almost half of men over 50 suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a benign enlargement of the prostate. Typical symptoms include frequent urination, a weak urine stream and unpleasant dribbling. At the patient day, you will learn more about the symptoms and modern treatment options, both medical and surgical. Innovative treatment approaches include minimally invasive procedures such as holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) and diode laser therapy. These modern laser techniques are more efficient than conventional prostate excision, cause fewer complications and reduce the need for follow-up operations. With the HoLEP technique, even large prostate volumes can be treated gently without the need for open surgery.
When prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate is diagnosed, there is often a desire for comprehensive information. In addition to informative short presentations, you will have the opportunity to ask individual questions. The prostate experts from the West German Prostate Center will be available for one hour for personal discussions.
We look forward to welcoming you to the 14th Prostate Patient Day!
