The tissue is removed via the patient's perineum. A grid (template) enables a pinpoint biopsy according to a predefined scheme. Likewise, previously identified suspicious areas can be punctured with pinpoint accuracy. This procedure is performed under short anesthesia. The number of samples (14 to 24 punctures) varies with the size of the prostate.
Lower risk of infection
The risk of infection is reduced with perineal biopsy because the tissue is not removed through the perineum and germs cannot be carried over from the intestine. However, the risk of postoperative bleeding is somewhat higher than with biopsy through the intestine.
For whom suitable?
Perineal prostate biopsy is particularly suitable for patients with an increased risk of infection as well as suspected tumors in a region less accessible for standard biopsy.
